Calico is a plain-woven cotton with a natural, unbleached look that’s often used when you want a simple, honest base fabric. It sits close to cambric in its clean weave, but usually looks more raw and workwear-leaning. For heavier, more rugged structure you’d move toward canvas, and for a much rougher, rustic texture, burlap is the clear contrast.
Different Materials for Different Feelings
Most calico is 100% cotton, so it feels dry, breathable, and easy to handle. In some versions, cotton–polyester blends reduce wrinkling and keep the fabric a bit more stable over repeated washes, while still keeping the same straightforward hand.

Calico is widely used for toiles/muslins, basic bags, and everyday craft projects where stability matters more than drape. Quilters and sewing students rely on it for practice and pattern testing, and small brands often use it for sampling before cutting into final fabrics.
